Single-Stem Celosia - Key Growing Information
DAYS TO GERMINATION:
8-14 days at 70-80°F (21-27°C)SOWING:
Transplant (recommended) - Greenhouse production is also recommended. Sow seed into 128-cell flat or preferred seedling container, 3–4 weeks before planting out. Light is required for germination; cover very lightly to hold seeds in place. Bottom water or mist lightly to avoid displacing seeds and soil. Grow seedlings at 63–68°F (17–20°C) night temperatures and long days. Low temperatures and less than 12 hours of light can cause premature flowering. Do not pinch plants. Plants produce one flower and one stem per plant: pinching will terminate production. Direct seed – Not recommend due to the economics of the seed cost. Recommended for protected culture/greenhouse cultivation. While these varieties can be grown in the field, they may be shorter than desired for cut flower use.LIGHT PREFERENCE:
Sun.PLANT HEIGHT:
30-48".PLANT SPACING:
3-6" Horizontal netting is strongly recommended. We have observed plants are shorter and tend to have thicker stems than when grown in the field. A higher planting density in the field may encourage plants to stretch and support development of thinner stems.HARDINESS ZONES:
Annual.HARVEST:
Fresh and dried – Harvest when flowers are fully developed, and stems are firm at the base of the bloom. Dried – Remove foliage and hang to dry.SOIL REQUIREMENTS:
Well-drained, moist, fertile soil high in organic matter. pH: 6.0–7.0 is preferred.SCIENTIFIC NAME: Celosia argentea cristata
