Summer Green Manure Cover Crop Mix - Key Growing Information

Summer green manure cover crop growing in a field.
Uses: Warm-season mix with high biomass production, excellent weed suppression, drought tolerance once established, and significant nitrogen-fixing potential from legume species.
Culture: Sow 1/2–1" deep after the danger of frost has passed and soils have warmed to 65°F (18°C) (which generally occurs 2–3 weeks after last frost). Typically germinates in 5–10 days under optimal conditions. Inoculate with a vetch and cowpea-type inoculant to maximize nitrogen fixation.
Seeding Rate: 2–2 1/2 lb./1,000 sq.ft.; 50–60 lb./acre
Light Requirements: Full sun
Soil Requirements: Prefers well-drained, warm soils with a pH of 6.0–7.0. Avoid waterlogged, cold soils.
Height: 36–60", taller in fertile soils
Caution: Avoid grazing for at least 7 days following a frost due to the potential for elevated prussic acid levels in sudangrass.
Termination: Terminate early if relying on tillage, as this mix produces large amounts of aboveground biomass. To effectively terminate once full height is reached, crimp or mow, then tarp for 3–4 weeks. In cold climates, this mix will winterkill and the sunflowers will provide a good winter food source for birds if left standing.
